The idea of starting college can be filled with a world wind of emotions. Not only is it a new chapter in your life, but it’s also filled with mini pleasures like decorating a dorm room, new friends, a new sense of freedom and responsibility.

One of the first stepping stones to college is selecting your freshman year roommate. How will you choose? Will you let your school pair your up with someone or will you go the safe route and ask to be paired with someone you already know?

If you’re caught in a bind and not sure if you should live with someone you already know, like your high school bestie, check out our pros and cons to living with a high school friend:

Pros:

  • You already know your roommate, so the pressure of getting to know someone within such close quarters is totally eliminated.
  • You can coordinate exactly how you want your dorm room to look like.
  • You already have a friend on campus and can attend events with.
  • You have a travel buddy come winter break (or any other holiday which requires a trip home).

Cons:

  • Rooming with a friend doesn’t allow you to gain the experience that most freshman experience with a new roommate.
  • Your freshman roommate should be the first new person you get to know during your college experience.
  • You’re less likely to try to expand your circle of friends since you already have an established relationship with your roommate.
  • Fights will happen, but fights with someone you have had a history with could be more damaging.
