Keeping organized in college has many benefits. For one, staying organized can help with both short and long term goals, keep your grades up and retain focus.

The trick is to maintain discipline and find organization skills that you can truly stick to.

First things first, you’re going to want to consider purchasing some items to make organization easier.

Essentials to consider purchasing:

  1. Organizer/Planner: A daily or weekly planner is ideal so you can map your class assignments and due dates. They’re also great for helping create short term goals. Monthly planners can give you better idea of what your long term goals are for the semester/year.
  2. Sticky Notes: These are perfect for all the details, i.e., your grocery list.
  3. Highlighters/Markers: Essential for color coding and categorizing.

After purchasing your planner, grab your syllabus for each of your classes. Your syllabus will play a major your with your planner. Check for exam dates for starters and note them in your planner. Also be sure to note any class assignments or projects and their deadlines.

From there, you should map out an ideal schedule of what you would like your study habits to consist of. Think about how much time you would like to give yourself to study for each exam. A daily/weekly planner is ideal for this.

If incentivizing yourself helps you accomplish a goal, do it. A great example would be, if you study a total of 8 hours per week, treat yourself to frozen yogurt or maybe you’ll feel less guilty about going out on a Thursday night.

Not only should this help you stay organized with your classes, it can help you organize everything else, that’s if you want it to. Throw your grocery list on a sticky note, your workout regimen or anything else that requires a list.

Keep in mind if writing down your tasks just isn’t for you, you can always utilize your Google Calendar which can sync to your phone. Set timers, reminders, notes and color code all your events on Google calendars if you’re more of a gadget/tech person.
